THE BIBLE AND MISSIONS

Back to Beginning in MISSION!

The Bible is a missionary manual, revealing God’s redemptive purpose as the foundation and purpose for the entire book. The Christian missionary movement is the expressed intention of the Word of God from beginning to end.

      I.  Missions is the FOUNDATION for the entire Bible

                             A.   The story of God accomplishing His only mission is the story of the entire Bible. Gen to Rev!

                    B.   The Biblical MANDATE (Command, Directive, Charge or Commission) is not limited to a few New Testament scriptures, but is actually the very backbone (support structure) of the whole Bible
.
    1.  Our MANDATE to carry the Gospel to every nation is revealed in
  •  Creation. As Creator, God is Owner! He has a right to all human beings as well as the earth   through creators rights. The issue is ownership. Col 1:16‑17

  • The Commission given to Adam and Eve. They were told to multiply and fill the earth with               covenant  keepers.  Gen 1:28
  • The Covenants - God enters into covenant with man that we might become rightful (legal) heirs so that      “all nations might be blessed.” Gen 9:7-9 God’s intention is always focused on ALL nations
  •  The Character of God   2 Peter 3:9 God’s Word always expresses God’s heart and is never contrary to his heart.
  •  Christ - The supreme missionary.  John 3:16 God had one Son, He was a missionary! SENT from heaven. He changed cultures.
  • The Coming of the Holy Spirit. When Jesus returned to heaven, the Father sent the Holy Spirit to reside in us.  The purpose of his coming was two-fold
  • The Church- (Ekklesia in GK - called out ones) called out of every nation and tribe (Rev 7:9) with a commission to disciple the nations (Matt 28:19). The church is authorized by Jesus to act on His behalf in the earth.
  • The Completion of history - History is God’s own story. God’s purpose to redeem a people from all nations becomes the focal point for His strategic work in the earth. Revelations says a great multitude of all nations, tribal groups, peoples and tongues will be standing before the Lamb. (Rev 7:9, 10)

2.                  Apart from God’s purpose to redeem mankind, there would be no need of revelation - or a chosen nation to bring forth the Messiah - nor the cross - nor the resurrection. We cannot separate the Gospel or the Church from Evangelism and Missions.

3.                  What was to fill the gap between Jesus’ first and second coming? The worldwide mission of the Church. Matthew 24:14 God is waiting on the church to do its job!!
